Polar Greetings – From Sketch to Product
Inspired by a personal experience feeding polar bears at my uncle’s zoo, I wanted to create a design that could be transformed into a tangible product—a greeting card and complementary gift wrap—while capturing the charm and personality of the animals.
Process
Illustration: Started with a simple sketch capturing the charm of polar bears. using the medium of watercolour and finishing it with fine liner.
Greeting Card: Digitally refined the illustration's and printed it as a personal Christmas card.
Pattern Design: Took part in Bonnie Christine’s mini wrapping paper course to transform the artwork into a repeatable pattern.
Product Development: Printed the wrapping paper sheets, bringing the design to life, to use for my personal gifts at Christmas.
The Final Card
The Solution
Illustration: Hand-sketched the polar bears, maintaining character and warmth.
Greeting Card: Digitally refined the sketch into a polished Christmas card design.
Pattern Design: Learned repeat pattern techniques through a short course and applied them to create wrapping paper and gift wrap rolls.
Product Development: Produced printed versions of the card and wrapping products, ensuring the design translated well to physical formats.
Outcome
The project resulted in a cohesive, personal product line that combined illustration and practical design. It strengthened my skills in:
Hand-drawn illustration → digital refinement
Repeat pattern creation
Print-ready design for commercial products
